Big Blue Betsy - a great project camper van for someone outside of London. Registered with DVLA as a motor caravan. This van would be a great project for someone to make into an amazing camper. She's a solid Mercedes engine, starts first time every time, even after not being used for a few months. Its an excellent size for a camper with plenty of space and is already converted including a double bed and a kitchenette, and is already registered with the DVLA as a camper van.
I've had her since 2018 and done a few trips in her, little camping adventures and some festivals. Been as far as Manchester and Wales (from London) in her.
I dont have the time or knowledge to make the best of her, and 2. She doesnt meet the LEZ or ULEZ standards for London. Betsy is an old van and does need some TLC and a bit of work. Here's a summary of the good bits and bits that need work.
Currently no MOT - I think it should be okay, had a good bit of welding done on the last MOT in 2019. Petrol gauge is a bit dodgy, doesnt show when its under a quarter. Got caught out with this on the way back from a festival couple years back!
Now keep a jerry can of deisel in the van - which will come with the sale. I got a new battery fitted last summer but since then there is a little quirk with the engine in that it doesnt turn off with the key! Apparently this is an easy fix regarding the fuel pump, but I've only used her a couple times since and just stall it to turn it off! Heaters only give out warm air. I've got a box of things that will come with the van including new headlight fittings, break pads, mains electric cable adapters theres a connection on the outside for this for campsite hook ups (not sure if it works).Needs a bloody good clean and a bit of tarting up! She's an old van so as expected there are a few rusty bits. Got a new windscreen fitted last summer as some pesky kids hit it with a basket ball, but that means the cab is definetly watertight and safe.
The front doors are a bit tricksy to close - they work, but I just use the side door for ease. Got lots of spare keys.
Has a side awning but i've not rolled it out so may need a good clean or replacing. Exterior lights for when camped up (not wired up). Interior needs some love - couple of the panels are coming off the ceiling. The interior is very comfortable as it is though - you can stand full height (my boyfriend is 6ft) and it keeps nice and warm and cosy. Gas stove, two hobs and a grill, is working well and theres still probably about half a bottle of gas left.
There is a leisure battery fitted, linked to the main battery, along with a solar panel drip-feeder. Unfortunately, I've never managed to sort out the electrics to work properly though. Some testing and following of the wires shows that its wired through the cab but then it disappears behind the panels in the living area - seen as a couple of them are coming off already, seems to make sense to take them off, re-wire and then put back together, but I havent had the time! There is a fuse box / inverter fitted. Lights fitted in the living area but not wired up (other than one that goes to the main battery). There is a little fridge, but not working, due to electrics mentioned above.
There is a sink - not working - but there is the pump and water tank and grey water pipe ready to be installed. Loaaaaadsa storage space - a shelf above the kitchen, cupboard under the stove and two bench seats that lift up and all the space under the bed can be used as storage as well as little cupboard above the bed. Got a cd player and radio. Various other cosmetic bits included - reflective window covers for the front windows, keeping the warm in / sun out and providing privacy, black out curtains in living area, big curtain for the bit inbetween cab and living area, european roadside safety kit, portable battery charger, jump leads, tools and bits and pieces.
